Repair welding

When a gate sags, a trailer frame cracks, or a bracket snaps off a piece of equipment, you're facing downtime and a safety risk. Repair welding is the fix that gets the metal back to doing its job. We see this with homeowners in Holiday, FL all the time, a broken hinge on a driveway gate, a cracked tongue on a utility trailer, a torn mount on a lawn mower deck. The situation is usually urgent, but a solid weld can often save the part and the cost of replacement.

The repair starts with a close look at the break. We grind away any old weld or corrosion, then clean the area down to bare metal. For cracks, we'll drill a stop-hole at the end to keep it from spreading, then weld along the crack with the right filler rod for the base metal, MIG for steel, TIG for aluminum. After welding, we grind the bead smooth and inspect the joint for full penetration. If the metal is too thin or fatigued, we'll cut it out and weld in a new piece.

What changes the job is the condition of the metal and the access. Rusted or painted steel takes more grinding and prep. Thick plate needs multiple passes and more heat. If the break is in a tight spot, like inside a trailer frame, we may need to work around obstructions, which slows things down. Weather matters too: wind can disrupt shielding gas on outdoor MIG welds, so we set up a screen or wait for a calm moment. The size of the part and how much we have to disassemble also drive the time and cost.

On the day, we arrive with the welder, grinders, and hand tools loaded in the truck. We protect nearby surfaces, draping a tarp over a driveway or lawn, and set up a safe work area. A cracked trailer frame is not always a simple weld. The break often tells a story, maybe the metal fatigued from overloading, or the original weld was cold and lacked penetration. We grind out the old weld to sound metal, then lay in a proper bead. For cast iron, we preheat and use nickel rod to avoid cracking. Aluminum is a different animal. It conducts heat away fast and forms an oxide layer that must be cleaned off before welding. We use TIG with AC current and a high-frequency start, feeding 4043 or 5356 filler. The puddle tells us when the base metal is hot enough, too hot and it sags, too cold and the weld won't wet out. We'll adjust the amperage as we go, especially on thin sections. A good aluminum weld looks like stacked dimes, not a messy bead.
